Frequently Asked Questions
What happens on our first meeting? We explore what you would like from the counselling process and make a formal contract to work together if you feel happy to do so.
How often can I see you?
Sessions are usually weekly (and last for an hour) but more frequent meetings can be arranged if you are experiencing a great deal of difficulty. We will agree mutually convenient days and times.
How much does it cost?
I charge £30 per session for counselling and £45 per session for supervision.
How many sessions will I need?
This will vary from person to person and is tailored to the individual needs of each of you. It depends upon the nature and severity of the problems. We will negotiate a first set of sessions - usually six and see how things go. Together, we will keep on negotiating more sessions if you feel you need them.
Do you give me advice?
No-it is for you to decide what you would like to cover and together explore what would be the best solution for you - I am there to help and support you on your journey of discovery and change.
How do I know you are qualified?
I trained at Somerset College of Arts and Technology in Taunton and have an Advanced Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling - I am very happy to bring my Diploma to show you. I also teach counselling in Barnstaple throughout the year. I am a member of the British Association of Counsellors & Psychotherapists (MBACP) and a member of CCYP their group for counsellors who work with young people)). I am bound by their professional and ethical framework to practice safely. I also attend regular supervision sessions with a qualified Supervisor to explore my working practice and extend my knowledge to further support clients.

Is counselling just for people with a major life crisis?
No - often people get stuck with a problem that they need to have an answer for and I can help you find your answer. Also, sometimes people just feel out of sorts but don't know what is wrong and need to get to the bottom of what is ailing them. It can be that you have a specific problem and know what it is but just need to share it with someone and find your solution.
What's the difference between Counselling and Psychotherapy?
Basically, counselling is not expected to be very long term and will cover general life issues. Psychotherapy is more long term and looks at deep-rooted patterns and more complex mental health problems.
Anything else?
Don't forget counselling can also be fun!
